This week started out as a 'defend the friendly base' scenario, although not intentionally, and quickly became a 'let's take the enemy field' scenario with a mix of fighter action, bomber action, and for a while some naval troop movements.  While it sounds chaotic; and it was, it was also a lot of fun.  The night however started out on a sour note, Fuze was sidelined by the flight surgeon for dental problems although he did stop in for awhile to see how we were faring.

Looking back at it I am not even sure how we got started on this path.  Someone, I think it was RTS, suggested that we spend some time trying to defend a local base while we waited for Squad Night to start and since we were in early it seemed to be a good way to spend the time.  At some point though the enemy just became overwhelming, which seems to be a theme recently and it seemed pretty hopeless.  Despite the number that were knocked down there were always more coming.  Since Squad Night started the idea of defending the base seemed to stick around and we gave it a go under the same conditions and still not getting anywhere and either Seal or Luft suggested that we try to take out the field that was the source of the problem.  The plan had lots of merit since the field was under attack by our side from all three arms of the service; air, ground, and naval and we planned on launching carrier strikes to reduce the enemy's ability to put more planes in the air.

At first things were looking very good; the enemy field was pretty well torn up as was the town and we had a friendly tank in the town as back up but this situation did not last.  The enemy was able to put a few planes in the air and were also putting GVs in to the field with some of the GVs defending the field while others headed out to put pressure on the forces trying to take the town.  Even with the growing opposition the battle see-sawed back and forth for quite some time, the Knights would take down the fighter hangers or vehicle hangers but the other would re-spawn before the town could be taken and as expected the enemy was bringing in more and more forces fm nearby fields.  To complicate things further buildings in the town were starting to re-spawn as well so the operation started to become one of capture and as quickly as it could be managed.

Myself and Seal both tried to bring troops ashore in the LVTs but by the time we got there, the enemy had too many GVs in the area to make it possible although we both got close.  The best run I made I was able to get to within visual rage of the town and was hiding in the ruined barn just outside of the town trying to take cover from the attacking planes and even managed to back out when I found that an enemy Panzer had a damn good shot but with lots of planes bearing down and time running out I tried to make a run for it, unsuccessfully.  After that it seemed that almost as soon as I launched the next LVT I was getting chewed up by enemy pilots as the battle had just become too hot.  It was the kind of hot that made co-ordinated attacks very difficult but everyone in that fight tried as hard as they could to make it work out.  Our attack was futher blunted when the enemy was able to sink the carrier and cut off our forward staging base.

Since things were now going downhill rapidly we set up plans for a bomber raid to try to take out the fighter hangers and vehicle hangers in one blow.  Some of us left A17 in formations of B26s with 8,000 pounds of bombs each while RTS took a P47 heavy and Taurus flew fighter cover.  We were able to get there but by then there were so many enemy planes that we didn't last long at all and shortly after I logged as Squad Night had come to an end and the enemy looked to be a steam roller that could not be slowed down much less stopped.  While we did not have any outstanding successes for the evening it was still a lot of fun in that we all worked together and kept at it.  As always I end with the kills I am aware of:

Kill Board

Joker66 - ?
Luft - 1 GV
Plus Seal - a few
RTS - 2 assists, 5 kills
Skeksis - 1 assist
Taurus45 - 1 kill
