Mission 1
A80 to A85

Mission 2
A85 to A88

Squad night this week was a real thrill ride as The Specialist’s took one field, disarmed a main city, and tried to take a second field.  Sadly I do not know how it ended as I was having system problems (again) and had to drop out early.  The system problems were a direct result of trying to get the 1.02 patch to Battlefield 2 and the latest Audigy 2 drivers to work.  Every so often my screen would break up into huge polygons and then AH would lock up and I would have to reboot, and of course it would happen on a night that I am flying (for me) well.  After the third time I gave up.  I am pretty sure that this has all been fixed now thanks to the ghost I keep on hand, sometimes the only solution is to go back to the beginning and forget you tried to update anything.   ;-)   But enough of this and onto the SNR.

I got online with just minutes to spare thanks to a nice dinner Stacey had put together and missed a lot of the action going on at 80.  Luft, Seal, and someone named Juice21 were on 111 while RTS and Skunk were on the squad channel but everyone seemed to be working on taking 85 even if they were not aware that the others were helping out.  Once everyone got on the same channel The Specialists started doing the thing they do best, working together and achieving results.  When I got involved the field at 80 was pretty heavily worked over so we started to work on the town.  I was flying a P51 heavy while RTS and Skunk were doing bomber work and Plus was in 38.  Fuze joined in flying a 47 and we leveled that town in a big hurry but we noticed that flak was heading our way.  Someone noticed a flak at the end of the runway and it looked like he was going to head for the town but for some reason he headed away from the town or maybe he was killed and re-spawned in the woods at the other end of the field later, but he was not much of a threat when Joker brought the first load of goons in.  It would not surprise me if this guy figured we were going to get the field and headed off to some place where he could cover the runway as we all landed, but more on that later.

Since I was out of ords and my .50s were not having much effect on the buildings I stayed as a spotter to make sure the town was not coming back up before our guys could get the troops in.  Luft made the first run and it looked like it was going to be on the money but he accidentally bailed instead of booting the grunts out so we did not get the capture on that attempt.  The pressure to keep the town down went up a notch but we got lucky in that regard.  Joker made the next run and got his grunts out but we still did not get the capture.  If I recall correctly he was a bit too high and one or two probably got lost, hung up in trees, etc but I did see a few get to the map room.  As those of us who were capping the town waited Luft brought in another goon and made the third drop.  It was picture perfect and we took the field.  Most of us landed except for Skunk who was picked off by the clown in the Osite which to quote the big, tall rabbit, meant war.

After this we started upping to try to nail this guy and he got Joker, Seal, and myself before we figured out that he had a direct line down the one runway.  I changed my approach and left off the other runway in a 38 heavy and came back around as Luft was working his way over in a tank.  I decided to attact the guy's attention so Luft could get his shot, and I think that was what everyone else was doing too as this guy had a selection of targets and probably couldn't figure out what was the best shot as I do not recall him firing as I approached.  I apologize to Luft for taking his kill but as I passed over I decided to let the bombs go.  I rarely hit on a level bomb drop and was thinking that I could shake him up a bit or keep him distracted and was very surprised when I got the kill.  It probably will not happened again.   ;-)   It was while on landing that the first crash occurred and I was not amused.

After rebooting and killing all the background tasks and getting everything I need to fly up and running I found that we were flying out of 85 to try and take 88.  Along the way was a large city but Fuze asked us to only hit the flak as we were expecting to capture 88 and take the sector.  Fuze and everyone else were going to hit the field but I decided to go after the town at 88 as we were going to have to flatten it to get the field anyway and to be honest, I have a better chance of hitting things when the targets are clumped together.   ;-)   As we headed in Fuze took out all of the City flaks so there was no threat from that area, and everyone else got into the fight at 88 while I delivered my ords on the town.  For some reason I did not do as much damage as I had hoped even after a second run with the rockets.  I think I am out of practice in ground attack with the 38, and before I could come back again with the guns and cannons I picked up a 190A as company so I bugged out.  It might not have been a valiant act but I know I can't fight a 190 in a 38 (sometimes I think I can't fight anything at all) and wanted to live to drop more bombs on the town.

This guy was very tenacious and followed me for about half a sector even though on his first pass I was able to reverse under him and get some distance between us.  Once I was able to work my exit path towards 85, which took a bit of doing, I let him follow me thinking that the base flak would give me some cover.  It did not come to that as Fuze and some of the others came along and while I kept dragging him, Fuze dropped on him and put him down.  I wish I had seen it but the 190 had gotten to about 800 and I was doing some scissors to buy some time while Fuze was dispatching him.  All of that work was for nothing as the second crash happened shortly after that, much to my annoyance.

I came back again to find that things were not going well, the enemy was fighting back hard and the city had been leveled regardless.  I also got back online just long enough to come up and crash again so I called it a night logging back in to let everyone know what had happened and why I was calling it a night.  I am sorry I didn't get to see the end of this one as it was a lot of fun and we were really trying hard to take that base.  Looking over my notes for the evening it seems appropriate to dub Fuze the "Flak Monkey" for the night as he racked up 6, count 'em, 6 flak kills before I logged off.  For those who don't play UT2004, a flak monkey is a player who scores something like 20 kills with the flak cannon without being killed.  It is not that easy to do so it is a compliment.  :-)

Another thing that I recall is that we were working with a guy who seemed pretty new to the game and was very eager to learn how to do things right.  He seemed to have a good start and I hope that he will fly with us again.  As always I wrap this up with the kills that I am aware of.

Fuzeman        8 field objects, 1 kill
Joker66           ?
Luft                3 buildings, captured 85
Seal        20 buildings, 1 field object
RTS                8 buildings, 2 field objects, 1 kill
Skeksis            21 buildings, 1 GV, 1 kill
SKunk            3 buildings (this could be higher but I only saw a few)

I don't know if I have to say it but I am going to anyway.  This was a fun evening despite the technical problems on my end and I am looking forward to next week.   :-)   Hopefully it will be "Meet the Fockers".  ;-)
