Hello Specialists,
First the ATR. Training involved the lead required on a 5" ship gun for Task
Group defense. Guns were manned on a Rook TG as a few of us flew toward the TG
in Bishop B-17s. The LCG was turned on to see the actual lead required to fire
close enough to the incoming bombers to get the proximity fuses to detonate. We
only used B-17s and in hindsight a variety of bombers and speeds, altitudes
would have been better. We did need to lower the altitudes somewhat to get icons
visible to be able to use the LCG.
I did notice it requires more lead than I had though and was using in MAs for a
long time. For this picture the bomber alt was roughly 10k and its speed was
200mph. You can see the lead needed from the LCG sight, the green +. The actual
aiming point, red +, was not overlapping the green one for visibility.
After training we went to TT but unfortunately none of our TGs were healthy
enough and under attack to really practice the 5" gunnery we just trained on.
Therefore we sent ahead and made an attack on V85 helping the Knights to evict
the Bishops from our mainland. A84 was the closest airfield but unfortunately
the ordinance was destroyed so we diverted takeoffs to A75 until ordinance was
back up at 84. A mix of heavy fighters rolled from 75 and we flew SE to target.
Of course the vehicle hangers were the prime targets and we did hit them. IIRC a
few were already down which complicated the attack as they would not all be down
for the required time to capture the base. During the attack a few of us were
hit and shot down by enemy defenses, there were a number of enemy Flaks and
Wirblewinds already out as the Knights were attacking the base prior to our
arrival. Our attack turned into a mix of vehicles and attack sorties trying to
nullify the enemy defenders. It turned out to be a heated battle on ground and
in-flight. I do not believe we, the Knights, succeeded in capturing V85 that
evening.
