13 May 2008 A Base Too Far
Film by Swoose
Hello Specialists:
This mission certainly turned out to be
'A Base Too Far' with the target nestled between three enemy airfields. It
was also far enough away that any damaged hangers would regenerate and need
to destroyed with a second wave.
We took off NE from A78 with a mix of heavy P-47D-40s and -Ns and climbed north to cruise altitude of 10k. We then made a turn to the northeast and headed to the target V65. We did pass a higher enemy B-17 formation but that was the only enemy contact we encountered until we reached V65. Primary targets were the vehicle hangers and field guns with any remaining vehicles as other targets that would need to be eliminated for a capture. At the time V71, a friendly vehicle base with spawns to V65 would be the primary route for troops. Unfortunately by the time V65s hangers were destroyed so were V71s so a good was upped and flown to V65 area. By the time we destroyed the field guns and hangers a few defenders did arrive on-sight at V65 to cause trouble. There was also a stubborn panzer and tiger tank on the base which were not eliminated. To counter them we spawned a variety of vehicles from V71 to V65 but most were taken out before we could destroy the enemy tanks. We also lost most of our CAP and the enemy planes could spot our vehicles for their vehicles with no trouble making it more difficult to attack with vehicles or even get close to the base. The attack was cancelled and we moved on to other areas.
