After Action
Report for 13 January 2009 "Carrier Hunt"
We started the
night in the Training Arena working on attacking task groups in Mosquitos. Using
airspawns to minimize wasted time climbing to altitude. We loaded up our
Mosquitos with 50% fuel, 2x500lb internal and 8 rockets external. After half a
dozen or so practice runs we decided to test ourselves and headed over to
Titanic Tuesday and hunt for a carrier.
There is usually
a task group from P86 on the eastern front somewhere and our sketchy intel had
it steaming north somewhere in sector 20,12. We loaded up our Mosquitos with 75%
fuel, 2x500lb bombs internal and 8 rockets externally. After our ground crews
gave us the OK we lined up on the runway heading southwest and took off. A
gradual climb and turn to the left got us away from the field. We then increased
our climb to clear
the mountains
east of A68. At about 15k altitude we managed to clear the mountains and headed
due east to start our patrol. As we went feet wet we spread out to cover and
search as much water as we could. As we neared the end of our patrol area more
reliable and recent intel came in
locating the
target task group much farther south than initially indicated. We then vectored
our group south toward sector 19,9. The only enemy encountered initially was a
formation of enemy Lancasters, which was attacked by swoose and Engr. As we
neared the south part of sector 19,10 more enemy were encountered including
F4Us, Seafires and Fw190s. We fought as well as we could in the Mosquitos but
were eventually
dispatched
without reaching the enemy taskgroup. Ditto did manage 4 or 5 kills in this
action. The enemy taskgroup was spotted however and a second attack was ordered.
Taking off
closer to the carrier we prepared out heavy Fighters of choice at A75 for
another attack. Other allied bombers were also using A75 as a takeoff field.
Enemy aircraft were spotted at 10k altitude over the task group so the alpha
strike climbed to 10k altitude over A75 to prepare for the attack. As we hit 10k
we changed course ESE to head to the target and continued a slight climb. As we
neared the V85 peninsula we encountered a variety of enemy aircraft at our
altitude. It again was looking like the enemy would intercept the strike package
before it could attack its target. We pressed the attack and headed east into
the opposition. The target task group was finally spotted due south of V85
steaming eastward. The strike package was slightly spread out but we did attack
as we got close. The majority of the package delivered its payload and I believe
Luft gave the carrier the coup de grace and sunk it. The cruiser was also sunk
in the continuing attack, possibly by Skunk. Heavy casualties were sustained by
the strike package and inflicted upon the enemies.
At this time the
strike leader had to go sleepy and take care of his paperwork but I believe the
remaining Specialists continued to battle the enemy.
